Upile Chisala’s poetry collection is literally full of soft magic. The collection is incredibly pro-black, it was so beautiful to read Chisala’s pride about her background. In addition, the collection touches upon gender, intersectionality, and feminism – as the title suggests, you are healed after reading this poetry book. Chisala’s collection is full to the brim with self-love.
Today and all days,
I am thankful for women of colour
from the root
apologize for their magic.
Some poems were more powerful than others, in particular, the poems which were about her pro-black pride. What disappointed me about soft magic was the lack of editing; there were a lot of spelling mistakes.
Why did I read it?
I came across Upile Chisala through a Tumblr masterpost about poets, and soft magic. stood out to me as a collection of unapologetic poetry, and goodness, it certainly did not relent.
Does the author have other works?
Nectar is Upile Chisala’s second poetry collection. Upile Chisala has also released a Spanish edition of soft magic.
Chisala’s soft magic. is an uplifting poetry collection. Her writing evidently comes from her heart and soul as this collection was incredibly moving and wonderful at times. I look forward to reading Nectar!
